The second main style of Touchon pocket watch movement which is far less common than the type preferred by Tiffany, is exceptionally attractive to look at and distinctly different from the other standard, slim and ultra slim movements. Until very recently, I had only seen 19 jewel examples, but I have just taken delivery of a 17 jewel example and so I have revised the information in this sectiom.
The barrel bridge links with the winding bridge whilst the centre bridge links with the third wheel bridge in a shape which caused me to name it ' The Bosun's Whistle Type '. Since posting my initial description of this movement on the Web and referring to it in this way, several other people have latched on to this term and are using it to describe this type of movement, so I think it is safe to refer to it like this in future. Note also the LXW on the balance bridge of this particular movement which refers to Longines ( Touchon taken into Wittnauer then into Longines ) ..... clearly produced around the time of the Wittnauer takeover ..... but I have seen other examples of this type without the 'foreign' bridge markings. This model retains the gold gear train and large jewels.
In January 2005 I took delivery of a 17 jewel version of this type of movement which is quite similar to the 19 jewel. However, it lacks the sleeve on the end of the escape bridge and is signed on the centre bridge as opposed to the barrel bridge. Another interesting difference is the use of a screw micrometer regulator as per early Touchon movements. If I encounter any more of these, I will update the information as I assess the differences.
